Prof. Dr. Stefan Katzenbeisser (TU Darmstadt):
Security Engineering – Building reliable IT systems for the world of tomorrow
Todays society rests on modern IT systems. On the one hand, we use computers, smartphones and tablets in our daily life to access various Internet services. On the other hand, IT systems form the backbone of critical infrastructures, such as the supply of power and water, telecommunication, ground, air and railway traffic and modern logistics. This strong dependency of our modern society on IT systems requires trustworthy and resilient hardware and software components and „security by design“. The lecture will give you an insight into current challenges and solutions in IT security engineering.

Prof. Dr. Stefan Katzenbeisser received the Doctor degree from the Vienna University of Technology, Austria. After working as a research scientist at the Technical University in Munich, Germany, he joined Philips Research as Senior Scientist in 2006. Since April 2008 he is a professor at the Darmstadt University of Technology, heading the Security Engineering group. His current research interests include data privacy, software security, cryptographic protocol design and the security of critical infrastructures. He has authored more than 100 scientific publications and served on the program committees of several workshops and conferences devoted to information security.

Description: The task of the week will give you a hands-on experience of selected problems in IT security. You will learn how to exploit security weaknesses and provide appropriate countermeasures.
